"Hey everyone,

I've been a little quiet on the mix front recently as I've been playing out pretty regularly, with a few charity gigs and a monthly residency at Jordy's Pizzeria in Nantwich. Last month, I was also invited back to play at Workinonit at The Hip Hop Chip Shop in Manchester. My first appearance there was last October's MF DOOM tribute and I released an extended version of the mix afterwards. Check it out HERE if you haven't already.

Incidentally, this has had to be released on my Soundcloud as Mixcloud banned the mix due to it containing more than 3 tracks by the same artist within the marathon 3.5-hour mix. Big up to Soundcloud for being so amazing!!

I've decided that I'd do the same this time as my latest appearance there was to play a 2-hour tribute to the one and only, J Dilla. The 2-hour set has now been extended to 3.5-hours and again, the mix is jam packed with all things Dilla from samples, remixes, covers, production & more. I wanted to get this out right after the set but I’ve had a crazy few weeks here and have only just got time to record it!!

As ever, a huge thanks to all the Workinonit crew, alongside Ozzie & the team at The Hip Hop Chip Shop for such an amazing event & thanks for letting me get on and close the event!! Great to catch up with all the homies and the rest of the good people who came out. Massive thanks to the guys for asking me to be the official DJ for Workinonit too!! I'm still blown away by this and it meant the world to me!!

It’s the second time I’ve played at The Hip Hop Chip Shop now and I absolutely love playing there!! Also, using my own gear too always things so much easier. Nice to have my trusty Technics 1210s, Pioneer DJMS-7, Serato DJ Pro & Phase. Always bulletproof and makes things so much easier!! I do realise why people switch to controllers though. All this gear gets heavy when you get to my grand old age!!

Anyway, I hope you dig the mix and I always respond to the comments, etc. If you could share this as far and wide as possible we can spread the word about Workinonit and the music of Jay Dee!!

DJ DS - Summer Vibes DJ Set 1 & 2 (320kbs)

 

After a hiatus of about 25 years, I've decided to get back into DJing live events and last night I was fortunate enough to be asked to play at the Summer Vibes rooftop terrace party at The Raven, Crewe.

Huge thanks to Rob, DJ Son & Michael for the opportunity, for being so welcoming and for putting me at ease. I've had a huge mental block over playing live again after several bad experiences in the late 90s.

Back then I was playing at the wrong venues and started to lose any enjoyment. Saturday was perfect in changing that mindset. They've also asked me to spin at the next one too so hopefully this is the start of something beautiful...

This mix is the first set that I did of three, but unfortunately I only recorded the first two. I'll probably upload the second set next week if I get the chance. Quite different from most of my other mixes, no cuts and juggles, just blends and good vibes. Mainly well-known hip hop and some R&B, sprinkled with a few remixes for good measure!

Huge thanks again to Rob, DJ Son & Michael for welcoming me into the crew & for letting me get over my mental block for playing out. A huge thanks as well for inviting me to play again at the next one too! We're hoping to get another on in during September but if not, it'll be early next summer.

As with Set 1, this is quite different from most of my other mixes here, no cuts & juggles, just blends & summer vibes. This set was more up-tempo than Set 1 with more Hip Hop & some R&B, sprinkled with a few remixes for good measure. My man, DJ Flipout also hooked me up with a De La Soul remix especially for this set too!!

Thanks for tuning in! I’ve decided to put together a follow up to my last mix & “Sound Clash Vol.2: When Hip Hop & Reggae Collide” and hopefully lives up to the legacy of Vol.1.

I was so grateful to you all that Vol.1 reached the global no.1 in the Underground Hip Hop charts, as well as the Dub charts. It also reached 7th in the Dancehall and 8th in the Reggae charts. I'll keep my fingers crossed that this one get’s the same love but as long as you guys enjoy it, I’ve done my job!!

 "It's been a while since I've actually recorded a new mix having changed my mixer & moving from Traktor to Serato. This is the first mix I've recorded on it so I'm exited to share this with you.

I've always had a huge love for reggae & it's related genres, with Crewe having a large reggae scene growing up. When deciding on a name, I felt Sound Clash was perfect. I've taken the two genres & mixed them together, through exploration of the original samples used, reggae remixes of classic hip hop & some a capella's over various other tracks. I've also linked some through phrasing used and hopefully there's a few 'easter eggs' for you along the way to keep you entertained.

Unfortunately I recorded a version this previously & my only copy became corrupted. After a meltdown & some serious use of profanity, I decided to re-record it. It's different from the original in parts, but I think the vibe of the mix is the same.

New mix from DJ DS........

As it’s summer here in the UK, I naturally start to listen to more Brazilian and Latin music alongside the normal diet of hip hop, etc.  I’ve always been drawn to this type of music and with my father being Portuguese, maybe it’s imprinted in my DNA.

I’ve decided to call it ‘Latin You Know’ for two reasons.  The first is letting you know all about the music’s roots and where the breaks come from.  The other is that you will hopefully hear tracks that you recognise but didn’t realise that you knew.

I’ve added a track list as usual to give the artists the credit and so that if you’ve not dug in the Brazilian and Latin crates before, then this may give you a nice starting point.  I warn you though, it’s a deep, deep rabbit hole but a hugely rewarding one!!

It’s time to go ‘Back to School’ again for the final time.  1991 is the year that I graduated from high school is probably my second favorite year, after 1988 of course!  I’ve loved making this series of mixes and it’s definitely cemented the fact this was the best era for the culture.

After a two-month hiatus it’s time to go ‘Back to School’ and to my 5th year, 1990!  This was the first half of my final school year and the penultimate mix in this series.

No idea what happened here as these mixes have averaged one hour and twenty minutes.  This one clocks in at nearly an hour longer!

This time around, I’m messing more with the original breaks and samples, alongside the usual doubles, samples and all that good stuff!

As ever, narrowing this down was so tricky & this is the longest track list yet. With more time to plan it (due to the turntable trouble) there are more samples and I've hired my youngest daughter as my art director!!

As once said by Big Daddy Kane, "its 88, time to set it straight" and "ain’t no half-steppin" as DJ DS goes ‘Back to School’!  “Word…… I’m ready”!

As previously mentioned, I was at high school from 1986 - 1991, therefore my 3rd year started in 1988.  What a year too…. This has always been my favorite year for Hip Hop. My biggest challenge was deciding what to leave out! This could have gone on for about a month and I still couldn’t have got all the classics in!

If you’ve heard any of my mixes you know what to expect, plenty of doubles, blends and all that good stuff.  I’ve also popped some sound bites from movies released during the same year too!

Unfortunately it’s the end of October half-term and that only means one thing…….. DJ DS Goes Back to School!  

As I mentioned in my 1986 mix, I was at high school from 1986 – 1991, therefore my 2nd year covered in this mix is 1987.  What a year too…. Getting this down to 35 tracks (plus an intro & outro) was so tough.  Hopefully your favourites from this year feature in the track list.

If you’ve heard any of my mixes you know what to expect, plenty of doubles, blends and all that good stuff.  I’ve also popped some sound bites from movies released during the same year including Good Morning Vietnam, Predator, The Principal, and many more!!

I was in high school during Hip Hop's 'Golden Years' (1986 – 1991) and I thought what better way to start the school year off with a series of mixes based around the years I went to school. Hip Hop was going through a transitional stage where new artists like Rakim, Kool G Rap and KRS-ONE were changing how MCs would sound forever.
