DJ PREMIER – CROOKLYN CUTS VOL. III (TAPES A–D)
Four Cassettes. One Legendary DJ. A Golden Era of Hip-Hop.
Back in the 1990s, discovering new hip-hop wasn't as simple as opening a streaming app. It meant digging through record shops, hunting down imports, studying tracklists and getting your hands on mixtapes that offered a glimpse into New York's thriving underground scene.
Few DJs commanded more respect than DJ Premier. Already legendary for his work alongside Guru in Gang Starr and his unmistakable production style, Premier possessed something equally important behind the turntables — an exceptional ear for quality music.
Released through the legendary Tape Kingz mixtape circuit during the mid-to-late 1990s, Crooklyn Cuts Volume III is a four-cassette collection comprising Tapes A, B, C and D. Together, they capture one of hip-hop's most creatively exciting periods.
FOUR TAPES OF UNDERGROUND GOLD
Across the four cassettes, Premier delivers an outstanding selection of rugged East Coast boom-bap, independent releases, underground gems and tracks from artists who would go on to become household names.
TAPE A sets the tone with M.O.P., Royal Flush, Ghostface Killah, East Flatbush Project, De La Soul and Mobb Deep. Raw, uncompromising and packed with the unmistakable sound of New York's underground.
TAPE B digs even deeper, bringing together G. Dep, Jay-Z, Children Of The Corn, Adagio!, J-Force, Common, OutKast and Jeru The Damaja. It's a perfect example of Premier's ability to balance established talent with lesser-known artists deserving wider recognition.
TAPE C captures hip-hop at a crossroads, with Screwball, PMD, Xzibit, Mobb Deep, Redman, Camp Lo and Ras Kass. Underground credibility meets the changing sound of an increasingly successful commercial scene.
TAPE D closes the collection in style, featuring M.O.P., Ghostface Killah, Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, The Roots, Method Man and Smoothe Da Hustler. A fitting conclusion to an exceptional series.
THE ART OF THE MIXTAPE
What makes Crooklyn Cuts Volume III special isn't simply the track selection. It's the experience of hearing these records through Premier's musical perspective.
During an era when underground releases could be difficult to obtain, DJs were genuine tastemakers. A Premier mixtape could introduce listeners to an unfamiliar artist, an obscure twelve-inch or an independent label they might otherwise never have discovered.
That was the beauty of mixtape culture. You trusted the DJ, pressed play and let the music take you somewhere new.
Tape Kingz played an important role in bringing these recordings to collectors around the world, and Crooklyn Cuts remains a fine example of why their releases became so sought after.
A PIECE OF HIP-HOP HISTORY
Nearly three decades later, these tapes represent far more than nostalgia. They're a snapshot of a time when hip-hop's underground was overflowing with creativity, competition and incredible music.
For collectors, the original cassettes, artwork and Tape Kingz branding are part of that history. Finding all four tapes together is a reminder of an era when discovering music required patience, dedication and a genuine love for the culture.
Crooklyn Cuts Volume III isn't just a collection of great records. It's a reminder of what made the mixtape era so special.
Four tapes. Countless underground classics. One of the greatest DJs to ever touch a pair of turntables.
No algorithms. No streaming playlists. Just DJ Premier, two turntables and the unmistakable sound of golden-era hip-hop.
