A rip from my tapes, recorded back in the day.  Thanks to Craig at RRR for having the time to piece it together for me, props.

It's a Funkmaster Flex Rap Exchange with Westwood at the 1FM Rap Show. There are endless 96 classics on here, and as it was the mid-90s, expect a few cuts from Compilations and Soundtracks [Notably America Is Dying Slowly, Sunset Park and Nutty Professor].

Listen out for iconic freestyles from Tribe and Wu-Tang [Ghostface, Cappadonna and U-God], Biggie and Doo Wop station IDs, as well as members of Tribe Called Quest rockin impressions of Tim Westwood [Safe]. The recording actually ends with what sounds like a short mix from DJ Cypress from the night before.

This show is chock full of specialized radio promos about Flex. Emskee has a dope one at 1:24 right after the intro promo. Caught a couple more throughout the show like the Biz Mark one at 50:04. And then there's all the drops from artists of that era layered throughout the mix which gives it that much more flavor. And of course we can't forget the music. From breakbeats (4:12) to reggae (75:41) to old school (103:05) to new Hip Hop, the show is such a great window into what was happening in NYC clubs in the 90s. Not to mention the party breaks Flex was playing that were real popular back then. Throw in a couple blends, shout outs to Big Kap (R.I.P.) who was spinning at the Palladium until Flex got there and mic breaks at 22:57, 48:09, 74:13, 101:37, 128:33 and 153:25, and you have 3 hours of great listening pleasure.

DJ Eclipse - "I know pretty much every Flex show I've posted starts with the Cold Crush intro, but I will NEVER get tired of hearing that. The way they took their old routines and incorporated Flex into it was so classic. Should have been a hit record. Speaking of classic, Flex hooks up with Mr. Magic (51:16) to discuss Magic's early beginnings in Hip Hop, stepping away from music, coming back and how he connected with Marley Marl and the Juice Crew. Flex also had Shyheim The Rugged Child as a guest (35:40) who after talking about his connection to Wu-Tang jumps into a freestyle over "It Ain't Hard To Tell" (43:00)."

So far most of the 90s mix shows I've posted here have been specialty shows that were found on non-commercial stations and focused on songs you probably wouldn't hear on mainstream radio. Funkmaster Flex was given an opportunity back in 1993 to start a Friday night mix show on Hot 97 which ran from 11pm-2am. His show was based more on what was popping commercially, but in the clubs and streets. What's most interesting about this particular show is to see how much commercial music has changed from 1993 to now. The show starts with a dope Cold Crush Brothers promo for Flex followed by a mixture of joints from names like Onyx, Kool G Rap, Brand Nubian, Zhigge and Redman. Within the 3 hours Flex also spins Reggae (52:46), Old School (66:09) and has freestyle appearances from Double XX Posse (75:11) and Rampage (124:53). So sit back and enjoy the music and Palladium references along with Angie Martinez, Overseer Salaam (Remi) and the man who is still the king of radio 22 years later.

Another peep into hip hop history courtesy of DJ Eclipse.......

Here's another Funkmaster Flex Friday Night Street Jam show on Hot 97 from August 6, 1993 featuring a very animated Busta Rhymes and Leaders of the New School. As soon as Flex cracks the mics open (94:27) Busta goes right into a freestyle before being joined by Milo and Dinco (C Brown was late). The whole segment is freestyle and interview intertwined. After Flex plays a couple L.O.N.S. joints they get into the history of the group (1:17:45). Charlie Brown finally makes it up (1:59:55) as him and Flex trade a few snaps near the end of the show.
