I'm currently self-isolating as I'm awaiting a Covid-19 PCR test result so I thought I'd dig into my old hard drive and pull out another mix "From the Archive".  Number 3 is a mix of tracks from Jeru The Damaja's first two classic albums, "The Sun Rises in the East" & "Wrath of the Math".  These were produced by my favorite producer ever, the almighty DJ Premier.

This mix was recorded back in 2016 in one take, with no planning as was always the case back then.  All I've done is layer a couple of vocal samples and drops to update it a bit.  There's some doubles & tricks but it's mainly just blended together.  The music really does the talking on this one!

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the mix and if you do, please like, share, comment, repost & all that good stuff.  I really appreciate it and always reply with thanks!

New mix from DJ DS........

As it’s summer here in the UK, I naturally start to listen to more Brazilian and Latin music alongside the normal diet of hip hop, etc.  I’ve always been drawn to this type of music and with my father being Portuguese, maybe it’s imprinted in my DNA.

I’ve decided to call it ‘Latin You Know’ for two reasons.  The first is letting you know all about the music’s roots and where the breaks come from.  The other is that you will hopefully hear tracks that you recognise but didn’t realise that you knew.

I’ve added a track list as usual to give the artists the credit and so that if you’ve not dug in the Brazilian and Latin crates before, then this may give you a nice starting point.  I warn you though, it’s a deep, deep rabbit hole but a hugely rewarding one!!

It’s time to go ‘Back to School’ again for the final time.  1991 is the year that I graduated from high school is probably my second favorite year, after 1988 of course!  I’ve loved making this series of mixes and it’s definitely cemented the fact this was the best era for the culture.

DJ DS - Goes Back To School (5th Year 1990) (320kbs)

After a two-month hiatus it’s time to go ‘Back to School’ and to my 5th year, 1990!  This was the first half of my final school year and the penultimate mix in this series.

No idea what happened here as these mixes have averaged one hour and twenty minutes.  This one clocks in at nearly an hour longer!

This time around, I’m messing more with the original breaks and samples, alongside the usual doubles, samples and all that good stuff!

It's been a while due to a broken needle but, as put by MC Lyte, this time I'm doing my thing with an '89 swing!  That's right, it's time to go ‘Back to School’ and to my 4th year, 1989!
 
As ever, narrowing this down was so tricky & this is the longest track list yet. With more time to plan it (due to the turntable trouble) there are more samples and I've hired my youngest daughter as my art director!!
 
By now, you know what to expect, plenty of doubles, blends and all that good stuff. I also love trying to link the tracks in other ways, through some word play, etc.

As once said by Big Daddy Kane, "its 88, time to set it straight" and "ain’t no half-steppin" as DJ DS goes ‘Back to School’!  “Word…… I’m ready”!

As previously mentioned, I was at high school from 1986 - 1991, therefore my 3rd year started in 1988.  What a year too…. This has always been my favorite year for Hip Hop. My biggest challenge was deciding what to leave out! This could have gone on for about a month and I still couldn’t have got all the classics in!

If you’ve heard any of my mixes you know what to expect, plenty of doubles, blends and all that good stuff.  I’ve also popped some sound bites from movies released during the same year too!

DJ Step One - "New mix by me! Banged this one out back in August. No real theme to it, just pulled out a bunch of records. Late 80s/early 90s stuff always seems a bit more summery innit? Probably because it's a bit more uptempo and funkier and the whole timbs/blunts/grimey thing hadn't fully taken hold yet*. As much as I like using Serato, I also sit in front of a screen all day at work so going all vinyl helps me to switch off. Couldn't come up with a clever title so kept it simple.
