Here's another Future Flavas show from the collection of DJ Eclipse. It may be the earliest show I have as Marley and Pete had just taken over Future Flavas from KRS-ONE in January of '95. Lot of joints from their camp played like Sah-B, LOTUG, Heavy D, World Renown and Dedi Baby Pa. A nice Marley remix of Brandy "Baby" right at the top of the show. Crazy too because this is the episode where they played my O.C. "Born 2 Live" remix (12:35) and said "got mad calls last week on this joint right here, gotta hit you in your head with it one more time". I had left a cassette of the remix for Pete at his Soul Brother Records office. Based on the hype created from this show we (Wild Pitch) decided to press promos of the remix to service to DJs.

Funkmaster Flex - Friday Night Street Jam Hot 97 May 7 1993 (320kbs)

Big up DJ Eclipse..once again!!!!

So far most of the 90s mix shows I've posted here have been specialty shows that were found on non-commercial stations and focused on songs you probably wouldn't hear on mainstream radio. Funkmaster Flex was given an opportunity back in 1993 to start a Friday night mix show on Hot 97 which ran from 11pm-2am. His show was based more on what was popping commercially, but in the clubs and streets. What's most interesting about this particular show is to see how much commercial music has changed from 1993 to now. The show starts with a dope Cold Crush Brothers promo for Flex followed by a mixture of joints from names like Onyx, Kool G Rap, Brand Nubian, Zhigge and Redman. Within the 3 hours Flex also spins Reggae (52:46), Old School (66:09) and has freestyle appearances from Double XX Posse (75:11) and Rampage (124:53). So sit back and enjoy the music and Palladium references along with Angie Martinez, Overseer Salaam (Remi) and the man who is still the king of radio 22 years later.

Another peep into hip hop history courtesy of DJ Eclipse.......

Here's another Funkmaster Flex Friday Night Street Jam show on Hot 97 from August 6, 1993 featuring a very animated Busta Rhymes and Leaders of the New School. As soon as Flex cracks the mics open (94:27) Busta goes right into a freestyle before being joined by Milo and Dinco (C Brown was late). The whole segment is freestyle and interview intertwined. After Flex plays a couple L.O.N.S. joints they get into the history of the group (1:17:45). Charlie Brown finally makes it up (1:59:55) as him and Flex trade a few snaps near the end of the show.

Wildman Steve & DJ Riz - 90.3 WBAU May 8, 1995 (320 kbs)

Another gem from DJ Eclipse's stash....

Here goes another awesome WildMan Steve & DJ Riz show. First guest of the evening was MC Serch (31:00) who was joined by King Just (35:55) right before hitting an ill freestyle session (38:47). Evidently this was the day that Wild Pitch gave us notice that they would be closing their doors for good as Serch repeatedly references that throughout the interview and even does an off-the-top freestyle dedicated to Wild Pitch (47:20) which unfortunately my tape flipped right in the middle of his verse. King Just continues on with the interview before dropping another short verse (65:18). The Mystidious Misfits show up later in the show (112:10) and drop some verses as well (124:12). Like most of these shows from the 90s, sometimes the talk breaks are just as entertaining as the guests or music being played. Hearing Riz communicate with Steve through his headphones plugged into the mic jack on the mixer is classic. BAU was definitely the Monday night hangout for us. Miss that spot.

DJ Eclipse has been dropping some dope radio show tape rips from his personal collection over the past month or so, this one is from 1st March 1993.

Here's a classic Wildman Steve & DJ Riz show from '93 which features a very early appearance of Wu-Tang members Ghostface, Raekwon, Method Man & U-God (54:09) as well as college radio veterans Total Pack which consisted of Ce Style & Kamal B Wise (99:14). WBAU used to come on Monday nights on Long Island's Adelphi University's 90.3 frequency. The show aired from 10pm-2am. The show location itself was like a typical night at D&D Studios. Once you were buzzed in and took the elevator to the 3rd floor you would stumble across many aspiring artists. Wildman Steve started on the station in '87 while DJ Riz joined him in '91. The show ran it's course until August 1995 when the frequency was sold to Nassau Community College. Steve's voice would boom through the speakers with a touch of reverb while DJ Riz destroyed the turntables. He remains to this day one of the nicest DJs to ever do radio. Both Steve and Riz's contribution to the show and Hip Hop itself still resonates today.

DJ Riz did a guest spot on Hot 97 New York last week, and that shit was crazy, he's kindly uploaded for a free download

Stretch & Bobbito - Boogie & The Barber 11 February 1996 (320 kbs)

Props to DJ Eclipse for sharing these tapes...

Based on the success of their "Stretch & Bobbito" show on 89.9 WKCR, Hot 97 offered them a weekly slot in early '96. Naming the show "Boogie & The Barber", the first episode aired on February 11, 1996 and featured guest Lord Finesse (101:53). When you heard Capone's voice running down the boroughs at the start of the show you knew it was time to press record. The show was on Sunday's from 12am-2am then later changed to 11pm-1am and ran until the duo parted ways in December 1998. At that point Stretch stayed on Hot 97 and renamed it "The XL Show" and Bobbito and Stretch started alternating Thursdays on the KCR show with Bob renaming his night "The CM FAMALAM Radio Program". Now 20 years later the two are set to re-release some of their classic shows on cassette through Fat Beats along with a feature film documentary entitled "Stretch and Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives" which will be screened in NYC on August 16, 2015 at Central Park. www.stretchandbobbito.com for more info.

DJ Eclipse blesses us once again....

From "In Control" to "Pirate Radio" to "Future Flavas", I don't think there was ever a better duo who were not only dope at what they did on air, but also responsible for a good percentage of the music we listened to back then. "Future Flavas" debuted in January of '95 on Hot 97 and aired on Sunday nights from 11pm-12am. Marley (mostly) on the mic and Pete Rock on the decks would bless us with weekly exclusives as well as impromptu freestyles and fresh radio promos. For example, peep out the Rakim joint (7:27) that for the life of me I do not recall ever hearing again. Then there's Pete's off-the-top freestyle sessions (5:46 & 55:55) as well as a dope Pete Rock produced Biz Markie promo (30:05). The great thing about listening to NYC radio shows like this one was that you were getting the music straight from the source. Songs would be recorded that week and played immediately without the wait of a label release or even the chance of ever hearing it again. Now that's exclusive.

Mr Mayhem & DJ Riz - 89.1 WNYU 1st November 1995 (320kbs)

Another tape rip courtesy of DJ Eclipse.......

Martin Moor & Mayhem started on WNYU in '93 on Wednesdays and ran the show up until '97. During those years they expanded their show to include Thursday nights as well. Both shows ran from 10:30pm-1:00am. Over time Mayhem would make Wednesdays more of a DJ themed night with guest DJs while Martin guided the Thursday night show. Shortly after Wildman Steve & DJ Riz's WBAU show ceased in Aug/95, Riz found an opening on Mayhem's Wednesday night spot as a guest DJ. Out of all the DJs that made appearances Riz was up there the most. Here's a show from November 1995 which features an incredibly dope freestyle from Supernatural (50:56) who is joined by A-Butta (59:30) of Natural Elements. Shout out to Sunset who was like the third member of the team and Stretch Armstrong for making a snap session appearance at the end of the show.

Marley Marl, K-Def, & Pete Rock - Pirate Radio 105.9 WNWK 22 January 1994 (320kbs)

DJ Eclipse with the tape rips again, props to E!!

After his "In Control" era and before "Future Flavas" hit Hot 97, Marley Marl blessed us with his "Pirate Radio" show which aired on 105.9 WNWK on Saturday nights. It was part of Hank Love and Half Pint's 2am-4am slot. Not only would we get Marley's flavor, but he would always have guest DJs as well. This episode has Real Live's K-Def on the wheels and an appearance from Pete Rock freestyling alongside Sah-B over a Pete Rock beat straight from his SP (32:19). Couple of rare joints on here too like the Rated R "What Goes Up" Black Cat produced track (5:45) and an LL joint that sounds like a Marley Marl remix that never came out (26:54). This show was also the first to premiere some of the Nas album cuts from "Illmatic" when they were fresh from the studio on cassette.

About a decade before DJ Premier started his "Live From HeadQCourterz" show on Sirius XM, he had another Friday night gig. "The Thunderstorm" which was hosted by Geronimo with DJ Premier on the tables came on every Friday night from 8pm-10pm on 107.5 WBLS. The show ran from 1992-1994. Listening back to this show you can hear how Premier was just as balanced then as he is now playing everything from East Coast to West Coast as well as independent joints. Although you'll notice that most of the dope joints then were all on majors. Jeru was also hanging out in the house on this episode talking about his new single "D. Original".
